Escambia County, FL - Two Pedestrians Killed on Perdido Key Dr
Escambia County, FL (July 7, 2025) – Just after 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, two pedestrians from Alabama were struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing Perdido Key Drive near River Road in Escambia County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 47-year-old man from Pensacola was driving eastbound on State Road 292 when his sedan hit the two pedestrians. The victims have been identified as a 20-year-old man from Hoover and a 20-year-old woman from Calera. Sadly, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the crash, Perdido Key Drive was closed for a period while law enforcement and emergency crews investigated and cleared the roadway. The driver was not injured. At this time, troopers continue to look into what led up to the incident and whether any factors, such as speed or low visibility, played a role.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected and hope they receive the support they need moving forward.
Car Accidents in Florida
In Florida, pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents remain a serious concern. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol show that Florida consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for pedestrian fatalities. With its busy roadways and tourism traffic, the state sees thousands of crashes every year, many of which occur in early morning or late-night hours when visibility is lower. Drivers and pedestrians alike should always remain aware of their surroundings and use extra caution when traveling during these times.
Understanding what often contributes to these incidents can help people make safer choices. Below are key points about pedestrian accidents in our state:
- Driver Distraction: Distractions such as texting or using in-car devices continue to be top contributors to crashes. Drivers must keep their eyes on the road at all times to prevent preventable collisions and protect pedestrians.
- Low Lighting Conditions: Accidents often happen in poorly lit areas or during nighttime hours. Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing when possible, and drivers should adjust speeds and stay alert for people crossing roadways.
- Failure to Yield: When drivers fail to yield at crosswalks or intersections, pedestrians are put at great risk. Both parties must follow traffic laws to reduce the chance of injury or death.
