Walnut Hill, FL (August 26, 2025) – Eight people were injured in a five-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 97, south of Ernest Ward Middle School, on Saturday afternoon, August 23.
The crash took place just before 4:30 p.m. when an 18-year-old driver from Atmore lost control of his SUV, which collided with a passenger van traveling south. The collision caused a chain reaction, with the SUV continuing northbound and striking three additional southbound vehicles before overturning.
Three individuals, including an 8-year-old child, were critically injured and airlifted to a Pensacola hospital after being ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the SUV and his 17-year-old female passenger also suffered serious injuries.
The other injured parties included a 63-year-old van driver and an 87-year-old passenger, who sustained minor injuries, as well as a 33-year-old woman and her 8-year-old passenger, who were also injured.
The crash caused a closure of Highway 97 for approximately five hours, with the road reopening around 9:30 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol cited the SUV driver for careless driving.
The crash site covered a significant area, with debris spanning around 450 feet. Emergency responders included multiple medical helicopters, ambulances, and fire units from several local stations.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured and their families during this difficult time, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
