Franklin Co., FL - Deadly Head-On Crash Closes John Gorrie Bridge
Franklin County, FL (August 12, 2025) – Monday morning turned tragic after a fatal wreck shut down the John Gorrie Bridge connecting Eastpoint and Apalachicola. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on August 11 when a westbound pickup truck crossed into the opposite lane of U.S. Highway 98 and collided head-on with an eastbound sedan.
Troopers confirmed the 71-year-old man driving the pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 64-year-old woman operating the sedan suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities completely closed the bridge in both directions while law enforcement and Franklin County EMS worked the scene. Drivers in the area were urged to seek alternate routes until the roadway could be reopened.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol coordinated efforts during the response. Sheriff A.J. Smith stated that crews were working diligently to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts go out to the family of the man who lost his life and to the woman who was injured in this collision.
Wrongful Death Accidents in Florida
In Florida, fatal crashes are a heartbreaking reality for many families. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, hundreds of wrongful death cases result from motor vehicle accidents each year. These incidents often leave loved ones facing not only emotional loss but also significant financial hardship. Understanding the factors that contribute to these collisions can help drivers remain aware and cautious on the road. Below are common factors often involved in wrongful death crashes:
- Driver Fatigue: Fatigue can slow reaction times and impair decision-making, increasing the risk of a fatal collision. Long drives, lack of rest, or medical conditions may contribute to this danger.
- High-Speed Driving: Excessive speed reduces the time available to react to hazards and increases crash severity, often leading to catastrophic injuries or death.
- Distracted Driving: Use of cell phones, eating, or other distractions can cause drivers to miss critical moments that might have prevented a deadly crash.
- Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol or drugs can significantly impair coordination, judgment, and focus, often with deadly results.
- Improper Passing: Crossing into oncoming lanes without proper clearance can lead to devastating head-on crashes, as seen in many wrongful death cases.
