Car Accidents in Florida
Florida has consistently ranked among the states with the highest number of motor vehicle accidents each year. With a combination of dense traffic, distracted driving, and frequent visitors unfamiliar with local roads, collisions are a regular occurrence. In 2023, the state recorded over 394,000 crashes, leading to over 250,000 reported injuries. You can learn more about safety measures and state-wide road enforcement efforts by visiting Florida.
Being involved in a crash can be physically and emotionally overwhelming. One major area to understand after a wreck is how insurance coverage plays a role:
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Florida is a no-fault state, meaning each driver's insurance policy covers their injuries up to a certain limit. This PIP coverage includes up to $10,000 for medical expenses and lost income, regardless of who caused the crash.
- Property Damage Liability: This coverage helps pay for damage you cause to another person’s vehicle or property. It's required in Florida, but many drivers may still face issues if the at-fault party has insufficient coverage.
- Bodily Injury Liability: While not mandatory in Florida, this coverage is crucial in serious crashes. It helps cover medical costs and legal expenses if you’re found responsible for another person’s injuries.
- Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Not everyone on the road carries enough insurance. This type of policy helps protect you when the at-fault driver lacks adequate coverage or flees the scene, as in a hit-and-run.
- Medical Payment (MedPay) Coverage: This optional insurance can cover co-pays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket medical expenses. It's especially helpful if your PIP coverage runs out quickly after a serious injury.
