Panama City, FL - Woman in Wheelchair Killed in DUI Crash on Beach Dr
Panama City, FL (May 20, 2025) – A crash in downtown Panama City claimed the life of a woman on Monday morning, May 19, after she was struck by a pickup truck while in her wheelchair. The deadly collision happened at the intersection of Beach Drive and Harrison Avenue, prompting a swift emergency response.
Authorities say the woman was initially transported to a local hospital with serious injuries following the crash. Sadly, officials later confirmed that she passed away due to the severity of her wounds. The driver of the truck, 54-year-old Clyton Ray Davis, has been charged with DUI manslaughter. He was arrested and taken to the Bay County Jail as part of an active criminal investigation.
The Panama City Police Department remained on the scene for several hours Monday, closing the intersection to gather evidence and reconstruct the incident. Officials have not yet released the identity of the woman involved.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
Pedestrian Accidents in Florida
Each year in Florida, pedestrian deaths account for a significant portion of overall traffic fatalities. With warm weather year-round and heavy foot traffic in both tourist and residential areas, the state sees thousands of pedestrian-related accidents annually. Many of these crashes involve elderly individuals, people with mobility challenges, or pedestrians in areas without marked crosswalks or signals.
The injuries that result from pedestrian crashes are often severe and life-altering. Below are some of the most serious outcomes pedestrians can suffer in these incidents:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): A fall or impact with a vehicle can lead to head injuries, including concussions or more severe brain trauma. These injuries may affect memory, motor skills, and cognition long after the accident occurs.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Pedestrians who are knocked to the ground or thrown during a collision may suffer spinal damage. This can lead to temporary or permanent paralysis, nerve pain, or mobility limitations.
- Internal Bleeding and Organ Damage: These injuries are especially dangerous because they are not always visible at the scene. Without immediate medical treatment, internal injuries can become fatal in a short time.
- Broken Bones and Fractures: The force of a vehicle hitting a person often results in broken arms, legs, ribs, or pelvis bones. Recovery can involve months of physical therapy and possible surgeries.
- Amputations or Loss of Limbs: In some severe pedestrian crashes, the extent of the trauma may require surgical amputation. These life-changing injuries have physical and emotional impacts that last a lifetime.
