Escambia Co., FL - One Killed in Head-On Crash on US 98

Escambia Co., FL (June 24, 2025) – A motor vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 98 in Escambia County claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from Pensacola, according to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol. The collision occurred on Friday, June 21, and involved a red Honda SUV and a gray Kia sedan.

Investigators determined that the red Honda was traveling westbound on Lillian Highway when it unexpectedly veered into the eastbound lane. The vehicle collided head-on with the approaching Kia sedan, resulting in severe front-end damage to both cars. Emergency personnel responded swiftly and transported the Honda driver to Baptist Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 12:08 p.m.

The driver of the Kia, a 34-year-old man from Elberta, Alabama, sustained injuries but declined transport to the hospital. Authorities confirmed that U.S. 98 was partially shut down for several hours as troopers completed their on-scene investigation and cleanup crews worked to reopen the roadway.

Our deepest sympathies go out to those affected by this fatal crash.

Car Accidents in Florida

Florida’s busy highways are the site of thousands of collisions each year, many of which result in serious injuries or loss of life. In 2023, over 3,200 fatalities occurred due to vehicle accidents across Florida. Head-on crashes, such as this one on U.S. 98, are particularly deadly due to the combined speed and force of the impact.

When fatal crashes happen, families often face sudden emotional and financial challenges. Here are several important legal and practical matters loved ones may have to address:

  • Filing a Wrongful Death Claim: If a family member is killed in a crash caused by another driver’s actions, Florida law allows relatives to pursue compensation. This can help cover funeral costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
  • Insurance and Liability Disputes: In serious accidents, questions of fault and coverage can become complicated quickly. Legal help is often needed to manage disputes with insurers and ensure that fair compensation is provided.
  • Emotional Grief and Counseling Needs: The loss of a loved one in an accident can leave long-lasting emotional wounds. Seeking counseling and support is vital for families navigating the grieving process.
  • Time Limits on Legal Action: Florida has a statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death lawsuit, which makes acting quickly crucial. Delaying may limit or even forfeit the ability to recover damages.
  • Investigation and Evidence Gathering: In fatal crashes, investigating officers conduct traffic homicide investigations. A qualified legal team can help review reports, collect new evidence, and reconstruct events to build a strong case.

If your family is facing the loss of a loved one due to a crash, it is essential to speak with an experienced wrongful death attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can help clarify your legal rights, handle communications, and pursue justice on your behalf while you focus on healing.
